I Like Being A Loser!

Lose It! Update

Last fall, I gained 30 pounds in less than three months.

I’ll boil it down to three words:

Book launch stress!

I hit rock bottom in December. If I kept gaining weight, my fatigue would only worsen. I didn’t feel comfortable in my body and I felt plain-old-gross.

It was time to take action and I’m so glad I did. Blogger Kitt O’Malley and I have been participating in the free Lose It! program. We’re in the “Bipolar Battlers” community group which you can find on the Lose It! website under “Community.” I’ve lost 15 pounds, I stopped my nightly binges, and I’m figuring out with my therapist how I can break the insidious emotional overeating cycle.

By the way, you don’t need to be in a group; you can go solo or create your own group –

Let me know if you have questions.

Dr. Ellen Vora

I want to tell you about another very cool holistic psychiatrist. In previous posts, I mentioned the holistic psychiatrist Dr. Denise McDermott who practices in southern California. (You can hear our podcast at this link.

Well, yesterday I came across Dr. Ellen Vora, a New York-based holistic psychiatrist. I think I spotted her name on Twitter. Anyway, she’s currently traveling around the world with her family for six months to visit cultures she believes are healthier than ours. She’s recording short-but-informative YouTube videos at each country she visits. Some of the topics are very relevant to those of us with bipolar and anxiety.

She has great handouts on her website that you can print out – for bipolar (mood stabilization), visit here.

I particularly liked watching Dr. Vora’s YouTube videos about insomnia, “caveman” sleep, lowering your standards for exercise, and being dehydrated even if you drink a lot of water.  There are 43 videos; I’m sure some of her other topics will appeal to you.

Here’s the YouTube link to get you started

See you next Friday! Enjoy your weekend!

Lots of love,

    • Finally replying “thanks, Kitt!!!!!” – I’m so late, but I have a feeling you might forgive me! 😜🍀🌹

  1. Thank you Dyane. Congratulations on your weight loss !Your latest blog is helpful with resources but I intend to spend my 82 nd birthday focusing on my family and dreaming of our being together! 🎶❤️

  2. Well done, thats awesome! I will have to go and check those links out as I seem to have found your missing 15lbs (on my thighs, mostly) and it’s really no fun shopping for bigger clothes! xoxo

      • I know it’s super-common, isn’t it? I hope that you check out Lose It! and if you feel the need to give it a try, you’ll let me know what you think! 🙂

    • Thanks so much, Cass – I’m thrilled you took a peek at the YouTube link. Recently I’ve heard about several younger, progressive female psychiatrists. Don’t get me wrong – if a psychiatrist is older and a good pdoc, that’s fantastic. It’s just interesting to see some members of the new generation of psychiatrists and I find it refreshing that they aren’t all male. 🙂

  3. I love the lose it app! That’s the one I recommend to clients (and use myself when I need a wake up call). I think it is easier to use than the other apps out there. Love you!

    • I’m soooo happy to read this, Mary – I didn’t know if you liked apps like Lose It! It really is a great resource. I think that when I reach my goal I’ll use it for maintenance, which I’ve never done before. I’ll keep you posted! XOXO

  4. Hi! I’ve never heard of the Lost It program; I’ll have to check it out! Thank you for this article and the resources! There are so many ways to bring healing to ourselves and each one of us benefit from our own unique combination of modalities. Thank you for all you are doing to raise awareness about bipolar disease and for all you do to help heal worlds of hurt. The birthing process can wreak such havoc on some of our bodies… Your work is so needed; I’ll be checking out your book. AND, congrats on finding what works for your weight loss!!

    • Hi Annah, (such a pretty spelling of your name!

Lose It!is a calorie tracker & it’s great for becoming more aware of what you eat.But some medical professionals and nutrition-minded lifestyle coaches I respect are against calorie counting. I see where they are coming from, but for now Lose It! works well for me. I feel really good using it. My big challenge is finding healthier ways I can utilize when major stress hits me, rather than mindlessly chowing down on food.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I really apprecate it.

      Take care,

      • Thanks for the kind remarks. 🙂 I’m right there with you learning to find healthier ways to manage stress. A toxic work situation led me to gain almost 25 pounds last spring and I’ve been working to take it back off. A food journal is helping immensely! But it sure goes on much faster than it comes off! Keep up the good work!

  5. Congrats on being a loser!! You are always successful at whatever you do, you SuperWoman!! I am proud of you. I think I’ve lost four pounds, although I still am doing some sugar bingeing (not sure if I spelled “bingeing” right but whatever). I am going to work on my compulsive overeating in therapy when I get a new therapist. FUN!!!

    • Thank you, my fiery one!
That is FANTASTIC you’ve lost 4 pounds – HURRAH!!!!!!!!!! 4 pounds is a big deal.
If you ever go to a store that sells small dumbbells (Target sells them) pick up a 3 and 5 pounder and you’ll see what I mean. So proud of you, girl!

Sugar is so damn difficult to kick! I still have a very small amount each day in my coffee, via the super-yummy and yes, addictive So Delicious French Vanilla Coconut Creamer. I only have a small amount because that stuff is a calorie bomb. There’s also some sugar in the my Pacific Foods organic tomato soup I like to buy! I’m too lazy to make the stuff. Oh well.

That would be awesome if you could work on the compulsive overeating with a therapist – check out this post that came up today on Moodsurfing:

      p.s. Love you!

      • Wow I have seen how many calories are in my coffee creamer when I add it to LoseIt!, it totally forks up my morning calorie count. I have taken to measuring it with a tablespoon so I don’t take too much.

I am starting work with a new therapist next week and I fully plan to address the compulsive overeating. It’s a toughie.

Thank you for your loving support dear Dyane ❤ ❤ ❤

  6. Woohoo! Way to lose it, Empress! You continue to inspire me in this war against Writer’s Butt! 😀 xxxxxxxxxxx Java Jean Kickin’ on the Lean Bean xxxxxxxxxxxxxx (PS–Writer’s Butt post is a’comin’ in Feb!)

    • You’ve inspired me yet again! Thanks to you I now have my next book: “WRITER’S BUTT” !!!!!!!!
Can I get YOU to write the proposal?????
      AND write it????
AND be my content editor??? (Although that’s a conflict of interest – it would be you, the gifted scribe, so who cares???) 😜

      It’s a trendy topic – see Joanna Penn’s latest offering! 😉

p.s. can’t wait for your Writer’s Butt post!

      p.p.s. XOXOOXXOXOXO

  7. Well lady love, at least January ain;t over yet without me commenting on this post. What a loser I almost became. whoop whoop whoop to Kitt and yourself. All my love always
