Looking for a Good Book?

The following authors graciously endorsed my memoir, and they have written fantastic books. I urge you to read their work!

“Birth of a New Brain is a gripping account of the awful juxtaposition of childbirth and the onset of bipolar illness. Dyane’s book is an informative and important contribution to our understanding of this triggering of mental illness that happens more often than is generally recognized.”

Kay Redfield Jamison

Author of An Unquiet Mind and Robert Lowell,
Setting the River on Fire: A Study of Genius, Mania, and Character

“This is a story of when love alone can and cannot heal in bipolar disorder. It is a story of mental illness seen through the eyes of a daughter, a wife, and a mother. Birth of a New Brain was a privilege to read.”

Dr. Greg de Moore

Author of Finding Sanity: John Cade, Lithium, and the Taming of Bipolar Disorder, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Westmead Hospital, Australia

“With artful prose and brutal honesty, Dyane Harwood depicts her struggle to have a stable, peaceful life as a wife and mother amidst the turmoil brought on by postpartum bipolar disorder in Birth of a New Brain. Despite many false starts, missteps, and even cruel and indifferent treatment at the hands of certain medical professionals she encountered, Harwood soldiered on and finally arrived at her own truth. The answers, for the most part, were inside her all along and consisted of self-care habits, including healthy eating, sufficient sleep, and consistent exercise. Thoroughly researched with a wealth of resources for mothers and families, Birth of a New Brain is an invaluable resource and reference point for mothers grappling with shifts in mood after the birth of their children.”

Matt Samet

Author, Death Grip: A Climber’s Escape from Benzo Madness

Editor, Climbing Magazine

“Dyane Harwood’s writing eloquently brings to life the complex interaction between the person, her world and the changes in how she how she perceives it wrought by the onset of mania following childbirth. She unpicks the essential conflict faced by all of us who experience chronic mood problems—between the pressure to follow sometimes uncertain ‘medical advice’ uncritically and the need to retain some sense of self-agency because with that comes the hope of being able to lead the kind of lives we want to live. She rightly challenges the doctors who project their own failings onto the ‘problem patient. Indeed, she highlights the importance for all of us of finding a doc in whose expertise one can really invest some respect and trust. We are all so much more than our ‘illness’ but can find that goal hard to achieve. Dyane Harwood’s extraordinary book shows us how to do it.”

Dr. Linda Gask

Author, The Other Side of Silence: A Psychiatrist’s Memoir of Depression, Emerita Professor of Primary Care Psychiatry at the University of Manchester

“Dyane’s journey through mental illness has taken an astonishing amount of twists and turns, and in Birth of a New Brain, she generously and courageously shares her experience so that others may learn from it. Birth of a New Brain is an invaluable and hopeful guide for anyone confronting mental illness so that they can get the help they need and deserve, from professionals and family, without shame.”

Mark Lukach

Author, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward

“Dyane Harwood’s new book Birth of a New Brain is a phenomenal gift to the mental illness community, especially for postpartum sufferers. Dyane’s clever weave of gut-wrenching honesty entwined with intricate storytelling illuminates an under-profiled mental illness. Birth of a New Brain is an important addition to the world’s mood disorder literature, and it will help those with perinatal and bipolar disorders of all kinds. Delve into Dyane’s incredible story, one that untangles the baffling and under-reported illness of postpartum bipolar disorder. Prepare to be moved. You won’t regret it.”

    • Thank you so very much!!! I’d be absolutely honored if you kept it in mind…have a wonderful Sunday!

  1. Blown away! Congratulations, Dyane. I’m SO impressed with your stellar roster of glowing endorsements. Can’t wait for October release!!!

    • Thanks so much,, Kitt! There are actually many more endorsements that were written by mental health advocacy luminaries you’d recognize i.e. BP’s publisher Joanne Doan, Intl Bipolar Foundation’s new Chairwoman, DBSA’s President Allen Doederlein, the co-founder of the ME/2 Orchestra (in honor of my Dad!) and some brilliant psychiatrists. I went overboard in asking people, but I have no regrets because it’s wonderful to get their support and their comments lend the book such credibility and I have no problem with that. 😉

  2. I’m so happy for you. How exciting! You inspire and motivate me. I found out yesterday that one of my favorite authors, Carol Lee Benjamin, has agreed to endorse my book, which will be published in October 2017. Thank you for leading by example. And thanks for the good book suggestions. You rock!

    • Congratulations Martha – that’s *SO* wonderful that Carol Lee Benjamin will endorse your book!!!!
Woo hoo! It’s a great feeling!

You’re so welcome, and I’m rooting for you and your book’s success from across the miles!

    • ***Thank you Cass!!*** I might print the nice comments & carry them in my purse to be with me at all time, a la Linus’ blanket, so I can re-read them when the less-than-sparkly reviews come in, LOL!

Almost every article I read about the book review process emphasizes that some people will not like your book, and your book get some “meh” & bad reviews – this apparently happens to any author worth her salt. (That’s a “nod to lithium” joke. Get it? It’s bad, I know!!!) Got to keep that in mind….😜

    • Thank you SO much for pre-purchasing, Susan – I’m truly honored!!! I hope that you’ll find it a worthwhile read! 💖🐧🐦🐧💗

  3. These are very impressive and well-deserved endorsements that bode well for lots of success! I am so happy for you 😍

    • Thank you so much, Martha! I just want the book to help people, and I know you understand that feeling due to your own memoir. You’re a wonderful example! 💜
Your support & your leads (i.e. National Association of Memoir Writers, etc.) have been awesome!
Hope you’re having a wonderful Father’s Day – the heat has been pretty intense, hasn’t it??

  4. Wow Dyane! Congrats on all the amazing raves by iconic memoirists in the mental health field! I have no doubt they’re well-deserved, and I want to read your book yesterday! I hope you will remember me when you become uber-famous! XO

    • Oh Lisa, I definitely need to email you. Lots to tell. Need your advice too, as always, and your grounded perspective.

Thanks for your kind congratulations!!! Uber-fame is not in my future, but a modest success in getting the word out, well, I’ll take that if I can get it!

I can’t express how glad I am that I bought “A Trail of Crumbs to Creative Freedom: One Author’s Journey Through Writer’s Block and Beyond,” a fabulous book filled with your brilliance and which was a literary trail that led me to you, sans crumbs, ha ha ha! (Terrible “joke” – I know! 👀)

That was one of the coolest author connections I’ve ever made! 😉 😻

  5. I was so excited to see all the endorsements for your book and I am so happy for you and for all the folks who will gain strength from reading your book.

    • Thank you so much!!! 🌞
There were many times I wanted to give up this project over the years, and many, many sleepless nights, but something kept me going. I know that’s a cliche line, but it’s true! (I think the “something that kept me going” was really a little something called stubbornness, ha ha!) If the book helps anyone, I’ll be so thrilled – that’s all I want it to do! I appreciate your kind encouragement! 🌟🌟🌟

    • We are twins because I’m wiped out too!
And it’s not even 8:00 PM yet – scary! 😱
      Thanks, sweet one.
Hope you have good dreams tonight…..
lots of love from your ☕️-lovin’ freaky friend!!!!!

  6. What fabulous endorsements, Dyane! And what a gorgeous and very atmospheric cover to your book. Looking forward to reading it when it’s launched in September xxx

  7. I look forward to reading Birth of a New Brain, Dyane! Especially as a woman with bipolar, entering her child-bearing years. Wonderful endorsements, too.
I would love to chat some time about writing and publishing- my editor just completed working on my manuscript of my memoir/wellness guide to living well with bipolar, and I am looking for an agent.
